Lone Oak Self Catering Holiday Cottage
This holiday rental property is within easy reach of Bath, Bristol, Glastonbury, Wells, Salisbury and all of the main Somerset attractions.
Lone Oak Cottage is only 2 miles from the busy town of Castle Cary, although the nearest neighbours are about half a mile away! The bungalow was built in 1952 and was originally home to the herdsmen. It was named after the solitary oak tree in the large field behind it. When we sold the herd of dairy cows in 2003, we renovated Lone Oak and added hand rails, a ‘perching’ stool and a recliner chair to make it more suitable for those guests who need a bit of help.
We have made further improvements to Lone Oak Cottage – with top quality new double beds (one 5 feet wide and one 6 feet wide), fitted wardrobes and vanity units, new tables and cupboard in the sitting room and new dining chairs and table in the kitchen and, in 2013, oil fired boiler central heating was installed. The Rayburn is now non-functional.
The cottage was rated with an Accessible M1 Grading in 2008. Please see our – access statement – for more details.
Although Lone Oak is suitable for older or slightly disabled guests, it is also ideal for all generations, with facilities for guests from 0 to 90! Several families have visited with Grannie and Grandpa.
We supply a cot with bedding, booster seat, cupboard locks, and socket covers, highchair, steriliser, bottle warmer, children’s cutlery and crockery, changing mat, step, even a trainer toilet seat and potty!!
The kitchen has a an electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, dishwasher and freezer. A washing machine and tumble dryer are available in the utility room.
There is a Freeview TV (Cbeebies and CBBC!) and a DVD player (bring their favourite DVDs)! New for 2015: both cottages have a Sony Bluetooth Wireless Speaker to play your music from your smartphone or tablet.
You may walk, have a picnic or play football in the fields behind and to the side of the property – as long as the beef herd is not grazing there!
Enjoy the private setting of Lone Oak Cottage with its slide and Wendy House – but come to the farmhouse to play in the larger children’s play area, feed the chickens, walk by the river, or swim in the heated outdoor pool. (A ‘rota’ system ensures that guests in all three properties have some exclusive time in the pool.) There is a shower room, loo and picnic table for Lone Oak guests to use at the farmhouse.
The separate living room has a digital TV with DVD player. A large kitchen/dining room is fitted with modern equipment and appliances including an oil-fired Rayburn to run the central heating.
There are 3 bedrooms, all with new beds and newly fitted wardrobes. The first double room has a 6 foot wide bed (sometimes called a ‘Superking’ size bed).
The second bedroom has a ‘King’ size bed (5 foot wide) and an en-suite shower room, plus patio doors to the back garden.
The twin bedded room (with 3 foot wide single beds) completes the accommodation.
The second shower room in the cottage features a large ‘power shower’ with thermostatic temperature control and hand rails for the less mobile, and a baby bath to put in the shower tray for younger guests. No other bath is available.
Lone Oak is warm in the winter with double-glazed windows and a well insulated loft. Furnishing and equipment are to the same 4 star standard as – The Tallet Holiday Cottage
